How to prevent cancer cervix?
Cancer of the cervix arises from the mouth of the uterus . 80-90% of the cancer cervix is caused by infection by a virus called Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Nowadays, vaccine is available against this virus to prevent it from happening. The recommended age for vaccination in girls is 9-12 years although it can be given upto 26 years of age. But the results are better if given earlier. It comes in two brand names in India, Cervarix and Gardesil. This vaccine is given at 0, 1 and 6 months interval. It offers 70-80%protection against cancer cervix. It is safe with no major side effects.
